Dr. Griffith Buck roses, blooming today

I have always thought that Dr. Buck was a rose breeder ahead of his time. As the head of the horticulture department at Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa, Buck was breeding for rose hardiness for the midwest and other cold climates. Nearly 100 varieties were introduced before the program ended in the 1980’s. My garden currently has a few of his introductions blooming today.

‘Malaguena (1976) is a medium pink shrub rose.I really like the dark pink stipple pattern on the petals.

‘Summer Wind’ (1975) is also a special  of mine because of the spicy fragrance and single form with contrasting stamens.

‘Folksinger'(1985) is a yellow blend shrub.
